GhIS President and Governing Council members in a courtesy visit to the Acting Chief Justice.
Accra, Ghana – July 10, 2025 – The President and members of the Governing Council of the Ghana Institution of Surveyors (GhIS) paid a courtesy call on the Acting Chief Justice of Ghana, His Lordship Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie. The meeting sought to explore avenues for enhanced collaboration between GhIS and the Judiciary, particularly in the areas of technical support, property protection, and dispute resolution.
Key Highlights of Discussion
- Land Disputes: The Judiciary continues to rely on cadastral plans and the expertise of licensed Professional Land Surveyors registered with the Lands Commission.
- Construction Disputes: Quantity Surveyors from GhIS play a key role in the resolution of construction-related litigation.
- Valuation & Probate: Estate Surveyors are actively involved in property valuation and probate matters. A formal paper on probate valuation was submitted to the Judiciary two years ago.
- Training for Judicial Staff: A request was made for training sessions in construction disputes, valuation, map reading, and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR).
- ADR Referrals: The Judiciary currently refers suitable cases to GhIS for ADR facilitation.
- Technical Collaboration: Recommendations were made to develop a probate valuation template, revive dormant joint committees, and engage in land demarcation exercises for Judicial Service property.
- Technical Support: GhIS proposed involving professional surveyor assessors to assist courts in complex technical matters, and training surveyors to understand judicial protocols for enhanced service delivery.
- Property Protection: GhIS pledged support in conducting value-for-money assessments, reclaiming encroached properties, and helping secure court lands nationwide.
Action Points
- GhIS to submit a list of members in good standing to the Judicial Service.
- Joint collaboration on ADR training and property protection initiatives.
- Address concerns regarding delayed survey reports and the impartiality of surveyors during court proceedings.
His Lordship Justice Baffoe-Bonnie welcomed the initiative and emphasized the need for closer collaboration to improve justice delivery, noting that technical professionals play a critical role in ensuring fair and efficient court processes.
In response, GhIS President, Surv. Kofi Obeng-Ayirebi, assured the Acting Chief Justice of the Institution’s readiness to provide all necessary technical support and training to enhance judicial effectiveness across the country.
