GhIS Constitution

Preamble

The Ghana Institution of Surveyors (GhIS) is established to promote and uphold the professional standards of surveying in Ghana, committed to integrity, competence, and public service.

1. Definitions

For the purposes of this Constitution, unless the context otherwise requires:

  • “Institution” refers to the Ghana Institution of Surveyors (GhIS).
  • “Surveyor” means any person who is a member of the Ghana Institution of Surveyors.
  • “Member” refers to individuals who meet the criteria outlined in the membership regulations of the Institution.
  • “Governing Council” means the principal decision-making body of the Institution.
2. Common Seal

The Institution shall have a Common Seal, which shall be in the custody of the President, who shall be responsible for its use in accordance with the policies of the Institution.

3. Objectives of the Institution
  • To advance the study and practice of surveying in Ghana.
  • To promote the highest standards of professional ethics among surveyors.
  • To facilitate the professional development of its members.
  • To represent the interests of surveyors in Ghana in dealings with government and regulatory bodies.
4. Powers of the Institution
  • Establish and enforce professional standards.
  • Certify qualified members and award appropriate designations.
  • Engage in activities that promote the surveying profession and enhance public awareness.
5. Membership

The Institution shall have the following categories of membership:

  • Honorary Member
  • Fellow
  • Member
  • Associate Member
  • Student Member

The qualifications, rights, and obligations of each category shall be defined by the Governing Council.

6. Governing Council

The Governing Council shall be the supreme decision-making body of the Institution, composed of elected members and ex-officio members as defined by the Institution’s regulations.

7. Financial Matters

The Institution shall maintain proper financial records, subject to annual audits. The financial year shall end on December 31 of each year.

8. Meetings

The Institution shall hold Annual General Meetings and may hold other general meetings as necessary. The Governing Council shall set rules for the quorum and procedures for such meetings.

9. Amendments to the Constitution

This Constitution may be amended by a two-thirds majority vote of members present at a General Meeting, provided that at least one month’s notice of the proposed amendment has been given to all members.

10. Code of Ethics

Members of the Institution are required to adhere to the highest standards of ethics, integrity, and professionalism in all their dealings.
