The Ghana Institution of Surveyors (GhIS) was established on 28th February 1969 at the General Meeting of the Ghana Branch of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, where a resolution was passed, and the Constitution was promulgated.

Membership of the Ghana Institution of Surveyors comprises members of recognized Overseas Professional Bodies practicing in Ghana, including the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors and the Institute of Quality Surveyors. Members of the Licensed Surveyors Association also agreed to be incorporated into the Ghana Institution of Surveyors in the class of Licentiates.

Institute of Chartered Surveyors for the year 1968/1969 constituted the Interim Council of the Ghana Institution of Surveyors and was charged with conducting the election of officers of the Institution, Council members, and arranging for the inauguration of the Institution.

At the Annual General Meeting of the Ghana Branch of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors held on 13th March 1970, Officers and members of the Council were elected in accordance with the provisions of the constitution. A formal inauguration of the Institution was held on 28th August 1970.

At an Extra Ordinary General Meeting held on Friday, December 10, 2007, the name of the Council was changed to the Governing Council with the adoption of the new constitution.

In 2014, during the 9th Surveyors Week and 45th AGM, an MOU between GhIS and RICS was signed.
